On Feb. 22, the Special Collections Libraries will host "Jordan is So Chilly: An Encounter with Lillian Smith," written and performed by Atlanta actress Brenda Bynum. Sponsored by the UGA Libraries, Piedmont College and the Georgia Humanities Council, the event honors the 70th anniversary of the publication of Smith's anti-lynching novel, "Strange Fruit." The play is drawn largely from unpublished autobiographical writing by Smith. Her personal papers are housed in the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library and were recently opened to the public for research. The performance begins at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of the Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries. It is open free to the public. A reception will follow.
