Based on seeding, the Gators could not have realistically hoped for a better draw than what they now have.
After knocking out Northwestern State 79-47 on Friday, the third-seeded Gators advance to face Minnesota on Sunday at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.
The Gophers reached Round 2 by toppling UCLA 83-63 in the late game Friday. They were one of the last at-large selections and lost 11 of 16 heading into the NCAA tournament.
Florida’s path for the first three rounds now is a No. 14 seed (Northwestern State), a No. 11 seed (Minnesota) and a No. 7 or 15 (San Diego State or Florida Gulf Coast).
Georgetown was the No. 2 seed in the South region, but lost to Florida Gulf Coast on Friday. The top seed, Kansas, stayed alive by outlasting Western Kentucky and will face North Carolina next.
