The graying of America isn’t confined to the population at large. Give the ACC another season, and barring new hirings, firings, and resignations the league will have seven men’s basketball head coaches who are older than 60. That’s nearly half.

Then again, at the time practice for the 2013-14 season starts at the end of this month, seven of 15 ACC men’s head coaches will be in their forties. That’s nearly half as well.
Five years ago only two of 12 head coaches were at least 60 – Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski (born Feb. 13, 1947) and Maryland’s Gary Williams (March 4, 1945). Every other coach at that time had been born after mid-century. Mid-twentieth century, that is.
An under-50 ACC head coach was asked to explain the rise in age among league bench masters. Should we attribute the change to better health? Different views of aging in contemporary society? Better ways of handling stress?
What could drive a man to prowl stress-soaked sidelines up to and beyond the age at which eligibility for Social Security is reached, a time when we’re supposed to kick back and enjoy the fruits of our labors, to wind down rather than rev up our competitive engines?
