Broun enters Senate race

By Tim Bryant

He is now a candidate for U.S. Senate: Athens Congressman Paul Broun made it official with a Wednesday afternoon announcement in Atlanta, becoming the first candidate to enter the race to replace a retiring Senator Saxby Chambliss. The 10th District Republican will run in next year’s GOP primary, and his decision to campaign for the Senate seat means his congressional seat becomes available: there is already speculation about who might run for that post. Names mentioned include Athens state Senator Bill Cowsert and Steve Simpson in Milledgeville, who ran unsuccessfully for Broun’s congressional seat in the 2012 election.
