Judge hears arguments on abortion bill

By Tim Bryant

A judge heard Thursday arguments in a legal challenge to Georgia's new anti-abortion law, the measure that bans abortions after 20 weeks. The American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia last month filed the lawsuit to block the law, which is to take effect January 1. The ACLU filed the lawsuit on behalf of three obstetricians. They say the law forces doctors to make an "untenable choice" since they would face criminal prosecution for providing treatment their patients seek. Supporters of the law say a fetus can feel pain at 20 weeks so the state has an interest in protecting it. It’s a measure that passed the legislature earlier this year, introduced in the House by Athens state Representative Doug McKillip. Soon after the bill was passed and signed into law, McKillip lost a reelection bid to fellow Republican Regina Quick.
