It’s a setback for House Bill 517, the measure ushered through the Georgia House by Athens state Rep Spencer Frye: the bill goes back to the Senate Regulated Industries Committee, making passage in the remaining days of this year’s legislative session uncertain. The bill would relax restrictions on beer and wine sales for grocery stores that want to open near colleges and universities. Democrat Frye says the proposal is designed to make it easier for a grocery store to operate in downtown Athens, near the campus of the University of Georgia.
