Storms move across Georgia; many lose electricity

ATLANTA —

Gusty winds and lightning knocked down trees and power lines across Georgia, leaving thousands of people without electricity.

Georgia Power spokesman Jeff Wilson said Thursday morning that 46,000 customers remained without electricity following the Wednesday night storms, with nearly half of them in the Augusta-Evans area.

Wilson says crews are being brought in from around the state to help out in the hardest-hit areas. He says about 14,000 customers remain without power in metro Atlanta.

During the storms that moved in Wednesday evening, hail was reported in several metro Atlanta counties.

Gwinnett County fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge says trees fell on houses in Lawrenceville and Snellville, but no injuries were reported.

A falling tree struck two vehicles in Sandy Springs, but all the occupants escaped without injuries.
