After doing one event with John McCain, President Bush will headline two more fundraisers for the GOP standard bearer today in Utah.

Yesterday's event in Phoenix wasn't seen by TV cameras or reporters (of course that didn't stop a major leak about Barack Obama earlier this year) as McCain and Bush try to be friends, but not too openly, lest they aggravate some of those voters in the Great American Middle.

The two men were finally seen together late in the day - late enough that it was after the network news broadcasts had been put to bed, so it didn't make that much of an impact news-wise.

Here was the minimal play-by-play from the White House Pool report last night about how the two men appeared at the Phoenix airport:

"When we arrived, about 5:57, Bush and McCain got out of the limo. They shook hands, gestured towards the pool and Bush went over to kiss Cyndi before climbing the stairs for Air Force One. The whole thing must have lasted less than a minute."

Less than a minute, and yet the fact that they were appearing together so little took up a lot more air time than that on the Tuesday TV shows.

Today, McCain won't be with Bush, who will join up with Mitt Romney and others in Utah for the McCain fundraiser.

One thing to remember is that President Bush remains a prolific fundraiser for his party, despite his abysmal approval ratings.  That's one reason he is doing other fundraising events this week for GOP candidates for the Congress as well.

Somehow, I don't imagine we will see many more photo ops involving McCain and Bush together. 

One reason is that Barack Obama was ready with a jab on Tuesday for the two men, zeroing in on the fact that reporters weren't allowed into the fundraising event.

"No cameras. No reporters. And we all know why. Senator McCain doesn't want to be seen, hat-in-hand, with the president whose failed policies he promises to continue for another four years," said Obama in Nevada.
