Step One For Sotomayor

Previous Posts

By Jamie Dupree

The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to vote today to approve the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to be a Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court.

There is no suspense here - the Judiciary Committee will approve her nomination on a mainly party line vote.

As of now, it looks like only one Republican, Sen. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, will vote to approve her nomination.

On Monday, the top Republican on the panel came out against her, as Sen. Jeff Sessions questioned her answers on the Second Amendment and a whole range of issues.

A final vote on her nomination in the full Senate is expected next week, just before the Senate leaves for an August break.

This battle really has receded into the woodwork, even amongst Republicans, as it has generated very little heat since the end of her nomination hearings, which were just two weeks ago.

Even anti-abortion activist Randall Terry has moved on, after conducting a series of demonstrations last week, his email today talks about protests on abortion coverage in health care reform instead.
