Immigration Reform Outline

Previous Posts

By Jamie Dupree

As the first lawsuits were filed against a tough, new immigration law in Arizona, Democrats in the Senate unveiled an outline of immigration legislation that they plan to push in coming months to both tighten the border and provide a route to citizenship for millions of illegals here already.

"I say to our Republican colleagues, work with us to fix this broken system," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who said this week that he would hold off on moving to immigration until after an energy/climate bill is dealt with by the Senate.

But the idea that Democrats can get 60 votes on an immigration bill this year seems remote, especially when listening to the Ice Station Zebra response that came from key Republicans.

"A conceptual paper that promises everything to everyone is not the same as responsible legislation that compiles the best ideas from both sides of the aisle," said Senators Lindsay Graham (R-SC) and John Kyl (R-AZ).

"The Senate Democrats' proposal is nothing more than an attempt to score political points. It poisons the well for those of us who are working toward a more secure border and responsible, bipartisan reform of our immigration laws," said the two Republicans.

The view down at the White House was a bit more positive.

"The proposal outlined today in the Senate is a very important step in the process of fixing our nation's broken immigration system," said the President in a statement.

"What has become increasingly clear is that we can no longer wait to fix our broken immigration system," added Mr. Obama.

But what has become clear in the Congress is that Democrats can talk about moving forward on immigration reform with only Democratic votes, but that they will need Republican support.

And right now, that doesn't seem likely.

But, we'll see what happens in the weeks ahead
