Campaigns using "quote approval" for top officials By Jamie Dupree
The New York Times pulled back the curtain this week on something that left my colleagues with their jaws open, detailing how the Obama and Romney campaigns require reporters to submit quotes for approval after interviews with certain high level campaign officials.

The story details how the campaigns keep a strong grip on their message by cleaning up quotes, taming them down and just doing general editing before allowing reporters to use those quotes.
Many reporters feel the pressure to accept such arrangements so they can get access to some of the top officials on those campaigns, not wanting to get left behind by their competition.
When we discussed this in the Radio TV Press Gallery of the Capitol on Monday, the idea of letting any campaign "edit" our quotes was summarily dismissed by me and my colleagues as unacceptable.
But obviously it is happening among major news organizations.
