By Martha Zoller
On July 3, I spoke about freedom at the Gainesville Symphony Orchestra's pre-fourth concert:
The pamphlet, read aloud to the Continental army on December 23, 1776, two days before the Battle of Trenton, attempted to bolster morale and resistance among patriots, as well as shame neutrals and loyalists toward the cause:
Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.
The amazing gift of our founders, is they only represented about a third of the populace. Had we had polling then, would we be here now?
My mother worked for man named, Guenther Hecht. His family fled Germany for America and their father was held in a concentration camp. The family was reunited after the war. I invited Mr. Hecht to speak to my American history class about coming to America. I introduced him as a "German-American." He thanked me, but corrected me, he said, "I am an American,"
My father...was a POW in WWII. He walked toward freedom after his escape in early 1945.
This Nation is about freedom.
Freedom, the free market and to turn a phrase we heard hear tonight, "if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere."
