Bad Judgment in Lumpkin County Schools, Newt Gingrich on To Save America

By Martha Zoller

Bad Judgment in Lumpkin County Schools

Last week, a Lumpkin County teacher, Catherine Ariemma, made a big mistake.  She had her students in her AP US History class watch films and then create their own films. The students would pick topics and this class decided to look at racism in America. A group of 5 students decided to look at the KKK.  They used costumes and on the day they wore them to school, the students were led by the teacher through the cafeteria to the area where they would be filming.  Black students in the cafeteria saw this and some were upset by the site of kids in sheets walking through the school.

It was a dumb mistake and the principal put the teacher on leave without pay pending an investigation.  She admits poor judgement and it was.

The Atlanta SCLC sent their general counsul, Rev. Markel Hutchins to meet with a group of upset parents on Monday night.  He called for sensitivity and cultural training for every educator.  That is wrong, too.

I can't stand the idea of everyone being punished for the bad decisions of a few.

The teacher should be punished, the students should be told why this was a bad idea and that's the end of it.  It was wrong, it should not have been done, but the reaction to it, shows that people were sensitive to it and it was not acceptable. It's over, let's move on.

Newt Gingrich on To Save America.

I talked to Newt and he is pushing back on those who say he's being too hard on the president and his administration in his new book, To Save America. He is talking solutions and that is what we need.  Here is the audio from my interview with him.
