Taiwan...A Great Week

By Martha Zoller

On Thursday in Taiwan, we visited the Aerospace Industrial Corp.  They manufacture air planes and parts for airplanes for companies around the world.  Like many large companies in Taiwan, they started in Mainland China before 1949 and then moved to Taiwan after the ROC fled the Mainland and set up the Republic of China on Taiwan.

We also visited the CCK Military Airport.  This was a US Air Force base until 1979 (16 years in total).  The Carter Administration abruptly severed air support and recognition of Taiwan as the rightful Chinese government.  He shifted recognition from Taiwan to Beijing in 1979.  On January 12, CCK had opened a museum honoring the time Americans were on the base and we were the first foreign visitors to the museum. It was housed in the base chapel and recognized the contributions of Americans to Taiwan's security and visits by people like Bob Hope, Sen. Barry Goldwater, etc.  When Carter abruptly ended ties, Goldwater and others immediately passed the Taiwan Defense Act and then sued the President

The Taiwanese understand that administrations change in America, but it it Americans that kept them from starving when they came to Taiwan and have been friends since then.

I am committed to restoring the full recognition of Taiwan by the US Government.  Why can't the US support it's friends?

Later we met with the foreign affairs advisor for the opposition party, DPP (Democratic Progressive Party), Dr. Ying Mao Kao.

On Friday, we met with the Economic Affairs Minister and the Minister of National Defense.  We also met the Secretary General of the ruling party (KMT), Chinese National Party or Kuomintang, Dr. Pu-tsung King.  Like most of the people we met, he was educated in part in the United States.

We then saw Taipei 101, one of the tallest buildings in the world.

On Saturday, we traveled to Zuoying in the south and visited with the Coast Guard.  We also visited the Kaohsiung Hakka Museum and had a tradition Chinese dinner.

These people eat, but I did not see any fat people here.  It must be what they eat.  It's a real mind body soul experience as far as the Chinese people are concerned.  And they consider themselves Chinese.

The final full day in Taiwan was in Taipei at the National Museum and the Flora Show.

On the day we return home, we are meeting with the Vice President of Taiwan.
