Hope Bill Passed by Senate With Some Modification

By Martha Zoller

The Senate voted 35-20 to pass a bill that would cut the amount of scholarship provided to Hope students. The top students with a 3.7 GPA and 1200 SAT (26 ACT) will however be immune to the cut and will still be able to maintain a full scholarship.  A new admendment to the Hope Bill will provide a full scholarship to the valedictorian and salutatorian in each high school.

Some other changes to Bill 326 is that Hope will no longer allocate money for books or other mandatory fees. The funding for Hope is also less concrete and the amount of award will vary each year, in accordance with lottery revenue. For the fall of 2011, students with a 3.0 GPA or higher will receive 90% of tuition.

Senator Jason Carter made a debut at this debate to push for a couple of admendments to the bill. His performance seemed to have sparked a strong reaction among some members.

"We feel that Jason has started very strong in our caucus," Senate Democratic Leader Robert Brown of Macon said after the fight. "Going forward, part of our object is to bring on new talent."
