11:30 Michael Levine...Is the country declining?

One doesn’t have to look far or wide to see an almost endless list of troubling signs for our sadly declining nation.

The average South Korean works about 39% more hours per week than the average American. The school year in south Korea is 220 days long, compared with 180 days in the United States. And you don’t have to spend too long at any major U.S. university to know which students really drive themselves: the Asians and the Asian-Americans.

Want more? Twenty six of the 30 biggest shopping malls in the world are now in emerging markets; mostly Asia.

As a share of the GDP, the United States spends twice what Japan spends on healthcare and more than three times what China spends. Yet, life expectancy has risen from 70 to 78 in the past 50 years in the U.S. compared with leaps from 68 to 83 in Japan and from 43 to 73 in China.

The crucial point is this: while the rest of the world, with China in the vanguard, is eagerly downloading the killer apps that made the West dominate for so long, America seems intent on making the same mistakes as the Europeans. The price will be paid, and in many ways, already is being paid. Not only are we saddling ourselves and future generations with vast debts run up by the baby boomers, we are also failing miserably to prepare ourselves and the new generation for a world of intense competition.
