I've had, shall we say, a challenge over the last two days on the blog. Technology is great, but when there's a glitch and I can't fix typos, that's a problem. It's all good now and thank you to our listeners and colleagues for helping me out.
Now to the 3 BIG THINGS you need to know today:
Mike Adams is honored and looks back at his tenure at UGA and looks ahead. I've told you before, I can't be objective about Mike Adams. He's done a great job and for 13 of his 16 years, I've had children at UGA. It's been a great experience. My only wish, is that we'd have a real Musical Theater program at UGA. But since I think life's a musical and I'm libel to burst out in song at almost any time, I'm prejudiced about this issue. On a side note, yesterday on Facebook I found some pictures of me from my high school chorus. Martha Zoller at 14, it was a trip down memory lane. I have two children who are "Double Dogs" and one who will be graduating in 2014. My husband and I are UGA grads who met at Myers Hall, so I appreciate all Dr. Adams has done. Adams' legacy will be a stong one and I look forward to sharing the next few months with him. You notice, I didn't say the last few months. He'll be on campus after some travel and teaching and I'll be bugging him, I'm sure.
Rep. Alan Powell talks about how to avoid a two front water war. He thinks the best way to avoid a two-front water war, is to join forces with his counterparts in South Carolina, to pressure the US Army Corps of Engineers to come up with what he calls a rational drought management plan for the Savannah River and her lakes. To that end, he and Elberton Representative Tom McCall have formed the Savannah River Caucus. He says he has 9 Georgia state senators and 20 state representatives, so far, in the caucus.
-- He’s working with an Anderson Co SC State House member to organize a similar caucus there.
-- Of course, what he and McCall want will not happen until legislators in Washington change the mission of the Savannah lakes, if that means adding “for recreational purposes,“ or similar language. So, the challenge is to get the Congressional delegations of both states on board. Strength in numbers.
-- He says that for a long time Georgia has only had one Congressman talking about the river in Washington at a time(Charlie Norwood/Paul Broun) But one man couldn’t get it done. He says Doug Collins “knows more about the issue than anyone we’ve had in the past.”
-- He says it’ll have to be a coordinated effort, GA and SC working together in Washington, to get the Corps to see the need for a better management plan.
This is important because we are already wanting to deal with Tennessee on water and we technically have a "Water War" with Florida and Alabama. We need some friends, folks.
And things heat up in the sequestration debate. Ridiculous claims are being made. Bottom line, it's 85 billion out of 3.6 trillion. Sadly, if you only look at the part Congress controls, it's 85 billion out of 1.1 trillion. What's wrong with that picture. Let the cuts begin.
For fun, we'll look at the possibility of a future Olympics in Atlanta.
