Zoller and Bryant: The 3 Big Things You Need to Know Today! DeKalb Schools, Ethics Bill Passed, Sequester

By Martha Zoller

Gov. Deal acted on the DeKalb County Schools issue, but it's not the only consolidation that's happening. I was at the Capitol when the Governor made his announcement.  There wasn't the "too big to fail" mantra, but there was the "school system is too big" thought.  Later today it's expected Dunwoody is going to propose it's own school system.  The city of Lakeside is having it's first hearing on creating it's own city.  And with Milton County on the docket, it seems the richer, whiter parts of Fulton and DeKalb want out of the mire that is county government and schools in Fulton and DeKalb.  I think the people of those areas are the ones that feel disenfranchised.  It's not a race thing, it's a performance thing.  Just look at the City of Sandy Springs as a model. DeKalb County Schools will be fine, but it's going to take some time.

And the Ethics bill was finally voted on in the House. We'll check in with new State Rep. Timothy Barr. As a first year State Representative, it will be interesting to hear his take.  The bill passed without a lot of fanfare and we'll get his take on it.  It appears the gift ban stays and there's not much changed as far as who is a lobbyist. But will it make a difference.  I'd like to see a model like Florida.  Term limits for leadership and committee chairs.  Then when a state rep is term limited and leaves the state house, the balance of their campaign accounts to the state party. That way, the party can really help in state campaigns.  Maybe that's something the GAGOP chair should be looking at.

Sequestration is ticking down and we're not sure where the Congress stands.  My guess is they will let it roll. Honestly, it doesn't pass the smell test that what amounts to 44 billion dollars out of a 3.6 trillion dollar budget will cause the end of the world as we know it.  Some departments prepared for it and we ought to celebrate them. The president got his tax increases in January, it's time to cut spending.

And a Dalton man is running across the country to raise awareness on Alzheimer's Disease.
