Zoller and Bryant: The 3 Big Things You Need To Know Today: Tax Breaks, Chip Rogers and Heart Health.

By Martha Zoller

On March 1, there will be a number of changes to the Georgia tax code.  Overall, a tax cut but it will be confusing for a time. First, the Ad Valorem tax on car tags is replaced by a one time 6.5% sales tax.  It will level out after a few years at 7.5%. This levels the playing field between dealers and person to person sales.  Then the marriage penalty is repealed, energy tax on manufacturers is repealed and the movie tax is extended.  Overall, a tax cut.  Local governments are concerned how this will effect their revenues, but it is a savings to taxpayers. ,

Then, there's still smoke around the appointment of Chip Rogers to GPB.  I had an interesting interaction with him yesterday. First, he said he would come on to talk about what he's doing and then he said he had to check with higher ups.  Chip is a friend and has filled in for both Tim and I over the years.  Always a great guest.  I know he wants to get out there and defend himself and he ought to do it.

And it's Heart Health month and I've got a story to tell. Four weeks ago, I had some symptoms.  Racing heart and high blood pressure.  My heartbeat was regular but even my husband was worried.  I had a regular appointment with my cardiologist the next day, so I went.  I've spent the month having tests and documenting heart rate and blood pressure.  I started moving every chance I got.  On breaks, working out 3 times a week and dancing around the living room on commercial breaks in TV.  I also changed the way I eat and I've lost about 8 lbs this month.  Guess what? My blood pressure is normal and I know what I need to do.  All the tests were normal.  It appears it was stress and weight.  So you'll be seeing less of me by summer, I hope.  Changing behavior is difficult, but I'm going to be a grandmother in a few months and I want to be here for all of it.

Finally, Teddy Turner is running for Congress in South Carolina. We'll talk to him. He did a funny ad yesterday about establishment politicians, but it was a swipe at former Governor Mark Sanford.  This is a special election to fill the seat of Sen. Tim Scott, who replaced Jim DeMint.
