Zoller and Bryant: 3 Big Things: Crossover Drama, Sequestration Backlash and Regulation Redux

Attended an interesting off the record event last night in Atlanta.  If your vision of the Republican Party is it's an "old, white guys" party, you should have been where I was.  I'll be talking about it later in the week, so stay tuned. It seems in Atlanta, at least, young, black, brown and women GOPers are gaining ground.

Today on Zoller and Bryant, tempers are flaring as we approach Crossover Day.  Sen. Jeff Chapman's bill on Georgia Power dies in committee.  Bottom line, any costs incurred by Georgia Power and overseen by the PSC will ultimately have to be paid by the rate payer.  When the Greenies come to the PSC and demand more from Georgia Power and they get it almost every time, that is paid for by the rate payers.  In business, any costs incurred are paid by the customers.  What benefit does Georgia Power have wasting money?  They aren't perfect, but they aren't corrupt as was alleged in the hearing yesterday.  And in the long run, will 60 years of cheap energy be worth the investment.  I think yes!

A bill legalizing fireworks passed the Georgia Senate yesterday.  I can see it both ways.  First of all, since there have been some fireworks allowed in Georgia, have you seen what they are selling?  The kits you can buy in Kroger, have a lot more in them than sparklers.  The logic is, everyone is doing it (fireworks), so why not tax it and regulate it.  Interesting logic, would that, should that, apply to everything? Horse Racing?  We have the Lottery, so why not Horse Racing?  Just a thought.  Is it a slippery slope of a free market.  I tend to be a free market person.  But to be a true free market, we've got to get rid of the nanny state and let people pay for their own mistakes.

Sequestration is a big nothing, for now, and the markets think we are on a roll.  I've said for weeks, the gamble is that President Obama has won every battle since August 2011.  Is it time for him to lose one?  I think the Congressional hearings are illumninating and finally, the Congress is asking the questions about government jets being used for private use.  They are finally asking the questions about meetings with wine tastings paid for by the government.  It ought to be austere working for the government and we need to pull the reins back.

And, Congressman Collins makes good on a couple of his campaign promises on water and regulation and a new group called Liberty Found, releases a report today on how regulation is stifling the recovery.

With Hugo Chavez dead, could Dennis Rodman with his meeting with the North Korean Dictator last week, be the go to guy on foreign policy?  Tim and I will have some fun with that.
